I started singing at the age of 5, I was exposed to music by my Grandfather Willie who would always sing to me. Exposing me to some of the Spanish culture and music. I grew to like it and I suppose that when my potential was realized, it was after I got my first Sparx cassette. It was Sparx con Mariachi and I was around 5 or 6 at the time, and with in three days I had the whole tape front and back learned and memorized. From there I just kept singing. I started mariachi at the age of 15 and truly was experiencing the culture of mariachi music.
In college, I was fortunate enough to train vocally with Mrs. Regina Rickless who trained me in opera for three semesters. One thing that I have noticed about Mariachi singers and Opera singers is that even though the genre of music is different, the same techniques are used in both styles. It also helps by knowing at least the basics of both genres because it offers more versatility in an artist.
